COD

Media Forms: What codes and conventions does the trailer use to establish the text’s genre?

The trailers genre is established by firstly the use of first person, This puts you at eye level and in the situation of the character and you are the person in that warzone. Also the mise-en-scene shows that its a first person shooter, the use of a variety of guns and rocket launchers shows that its a modern battlefield and the juggernauts highlight that the games is about fighting and shooting. Also the use of fighter jets highlights its a army fighting games. There are lots of establishing shots which let the audience soak in the maps which are being sold and there are lots action packed high adrenaline moments which makes the game look fun and entertaining to the player.

Media Representations: How is war represented in the trailer?

War is represented in a way which is less serious than the ones going on in the work as this is not a real life situation, its animated and it makes out war to be all close quartered with loads of gun fights and fighter jets flying over when in real life its a lot less upfront and more tactical. Also it can create a morale panic for parents who may not want there children to be playing games were such violence is open to anyone. Also the globe may connote that war is a worldwide problem and loads of countries are fighting for so many causes and as times goes on and technology increase the world will become more connected and things that there country are doing that are wrong can be spoken out against.

Media Institutions: In what ways is the trailer typical of the video game industry?

This trailer is typical of a Call of Duty brand as it some of the shots are in First person, also the shots are fast paced and they create a montage to draw the audiences attention and keep them concentrated on the product. Also it shows the most exciting parts of the games this being the smaller maps were fighting can be more up front. Also they include a variety of guns and artillery to show that the game has lots of thing to do and they are countless things to do. Also its typical of modern warfare as it has a constant use of the colour green which is iconic and symbolise the main platform xbox and the production values at the end being the xbox symbol is a common feature in all call of duty franchises.

Media Audiences: Who does this text appeal to and what pleasures does it offer?

It appeals more to the male audience as they are the ones who like guns and aeroplanes, also men are the more patriarcal types and it makes them think they are fighting for the country. Also the multiplayer aspect shows that you can play with everyone and people who are thousands of miles aways can be easily got too, this being the use of the global village theory. Also some people may like the fact they are killing other people and they are watching people die and they take pleasure from that, this being the Schadenfreude theory.
In this weetabix advert genders are represented in stereotypical ways, it shows the women to be the lady that stays at home and does all the house work, and does all the shopping and cleaning and looks after the young child, this being stereotypical as not all women are stay at home mum's also on the other hand it can relate to the mother who do stay at home and took after the house and kids, this being the uses of gratification 1976. On the other hand its shows the men to the leader of the household as he is the one who starts the conversation and he is the one who goes to work and earns a living for the family which was a typical outlook on the family in the early 1900s.

What techniques are used to engage the audience? first technique used to engage the reader is the use of the camera shots, one of the establishing shot of the cabin in the beginning shows the audience how the house were there are going to be living looks. it gives a overall reference to the audience and makes them think and ask questions about what to expect this creating enigma. The trailer is a montage of all different moments through out the movie and build up to the main event the cuts are very noticeable and juxtaposing the images creates a contrast rather than a smooth transition this leading to a greater impact being made on the viewer. The close ups of the face get across the emotion of the actors and emphasises  that they are being tormented by red neck zombies. The lighting throughout the whole trailer is low key this creates more suspense and it also makes the viewer less likely to expect whats coming, this maybe from the sides or behind as theres less light to make references. Also throughout the whole extract you are not given a proper view of the attacker and the person killing everyone, this also creates enigma and makes the viewer think and want to know whats causing all this problem. In the trailer there is alot of non digetic sounds which create an impact, such as when the girl is dared to kiss the animal head the use of slow paced deep music creates suspense and they can expect something bad is going to happen, this leading to the audience feeling more engaged as they dont no what to expect also the use of the heavy metal rock music which starts half way through goes paralell with the type of movie.

How is Ayrton Represented in the trailer?

In this extract Ayrton Senna is portrayed in 2 different ways, Firstly near the beginning of the extract Ayrton is represented as a champion and someone who is better than the rest. The narrative over the trailer are all words of praise towards Senna and all the quick shots are of senna on the track either first or overtaking someone to become first. There are shots of senna were the camera is pointing up towards Ayrton and this portraying that senna was looked up to by the public and people aspired to be like him.  Most of the shots are at grand prix or at the beaches and citys connoting he was rich and he was enjoying life. Also there are shots of him with his family which shows he liked to spend time with his family which may relate to the people sitting at home and they can get a connection because behind all the cameras and all the fame he was just a normal person (Uses of Grats 1976).

But the other representation in the middle juxtaposes that of the beginning. He is described to be a Maverick as he doesn't like how F1 was being governed, there are extracts of Alain Prost saying that he has a problem and that he thinks he cannot kill himself. this is also shown in the shots and music chosen by the director, these being of Ayrton's crashes and shots of Ayrton in pain and almost making him look like a anti-hero and the music is slow paced and classical, this shows to the audience that Senna also had his bad side and makes the viewer think about what he done for people to say this about him and this creating enigma codes and making the viewer want to go and watch it in full.

In what ways is the extract typical of the film/advertising/television industry and/or what values does it promote?

The programme starts off with the classic Trevor McDonald voice-over in which he tells the audience of the news. While he uses his very deep voice to make the audience interested, the cutaways are shown at the same time to add an image to the news he’s going to tell. At the side of the cutaways is text telling you the name of the programme and to add colour to the screen to make it more appealing for the audience. As the ITV News theme is being played, you have the presenter who continues to inform the viewers on the days news. When it first cuts to a studio shot, its a wide shot in which you see the whole studio including other cameras and the screen in which the cutaways are on. The camera slowly zooms in with the music being played at the same time which adds intensity. After that the music draws to a close and the camera changes to a medium shot in which you only see Trevor and the green screen in the background in which has the the news and images on it. Cutting to a medium shot shows that the news is about to begin and eye contact with the audience is key. When the programme goes to tell the main news story, the cutaways are played with the voice-over of another presenter in which he describes in full detail the news. Whats so important about this particular main story is that the gentleman narrating the story is later shown talking directly to the camera. This again shows eye contact is key and makes it more personal for the people watching.
The second story starts off the same way in which the presenter talks directly to the camera. Afterwards we have more cutaways with text at the bottom of the screen showing the name of the man telling this particular piece of news. The voice-over begins and the story begins to unroll. Whats different with this story is that we then get still images instead of moving image to show the evidence behind the story and build trust with the audience. When the cutaways are over, something is shown which is very important in news programmes and they are called Vox pops. Vox pops are otherwise known as “voice of the people” and its mainly when members of the public tell you their opinion on this particular matter.

Who does this text/brand appeal to?

This text will appeal firstly to the older generation who were brought up with novels written by charles dickens and making a adaption for the 19Th. century novel would be ideal as it will re spark everything they knew about the novel and it will bring been nostalgic as when they were young they also read the book and they can relate to the adaption. Also this will be ideal for the later generation who may not have known about great expectation and as this novel is regarded a classic it would go hand in hand with BBCs philosophy which is to inform and educate. Also as the E media and tv are become more integrated with the addition of iPlayer and other similar services it will be easier for the young to follow the series and be come interested with whats in it. Also it would appeal to the more educated people such as the ABC1 group as it was more of a longer and the language used within the trailer is harder to interpret.

Codes and Conventions: What techniques are used in the trailer to make the viewer want to watch the movie?

Codes And Conventions:

Senna is a Observational documentary which is also reflexive, i has many codes and conventions first being the narrative, I starts off showing how Ayrton Senna worked his way up from the Karts to F1. The narrator being Ayrton showing the highs of when he was a child and his first few years in F1 and how he won the championships and all the benefits with being a rich driver. But also its balanced out by the death of Ayrton at the end and how it say F1 is do dangerous, the narrative is matched with the clips in the trailer as when Formula 1 is being spoken of in a negative way and unsafe it shows Rubens Barrichello crashing and there are constant quick edits of Ayrton himself crashing and the ultimate crash which killed him. Also there are words situated throughout out the whole extract with words such as 'Genius'; 'Outsider' which makes the reader think and ask question about why Senna was regarded a genius or an outsider creating enigma codes and the only way of those questions being answer is by going to the cinema and watching the movie.

The use of fire at the end connotes that Ayrton was a very fierce and angry person. Also the trailers and movie uses flashbacks of old races that senna has raced in, these flashbacks create nostalgia and it can create identification as the person watching can relate to the time in which it happened creating a bigger effect. this being the uses of gratification 1974. The trailer also is a collection of clips this being almost a montage of Ayrton's life. This montage creates pace and gives the viewer more to think about and watch this leads to more question being bounced around and leading to them watching it.

Codes and Conventions:

First way Kony persuades you to donate to the charity is by the use of direct mode of address, This makes you think and actively ingage with the text creating a bigger impact as you think about the matter and you . Also the voice over lead to the text being anchored and having a set meaning, with his voice being the main way the viewer can gain information is from what he says; This being the voice of god. and as he uses home video and POV, He includes shots of his son and his wife giving birth which creates a personal side to the documentary leading to the viewer trusting the text more. Also the documentary turns from a expository to a reflecive creating a bigger impact as it covers all sides. The use of the Globe in the begining connotes globalisation and how everything is more accsessable by everyone allover the world as they can use the internet and communicate more easily, This links to the Global Village theory which was outlined of by McLuan. He also includes count downs all around the documentary which leads to the user to think what he may speak of and creating suspence and this being the use of enigma codes. Also the countdown leads to the documentary portraying a sense of urgency and you have to do something to help the people in uganda. Also as the main presentor is American it whos how american is the dominant super power and the good guy in the world who will help everyone and how it can dominate the worlds media which is known as Americanisation. There also is a narrative equilibrum in the begging he is very serious and shows how bad things are in Uganda and how they need help but towards the middle and end it shows how we can help and make things better creating a better mood and showing every person can make a change. Also the text has the use of Zeigiests spirit of the age, it shows how Kony 2012 is the main aim of the public and how people join together to help a cause, also it shows how facebook and social networking is the big thing in the 21century and how everyone is helping KONY 2012 through facebook

Kony 2012

Codes and Conventions:

Kony 2012 uses many techniques to persuade the viewer to support the cause. Firstly it uses a viral video to let people know about what is happening in Uganda, within the video the the main focus is how Kony treats children and how childrens lives are mad a misery by this one man. This makes want to help and do anything possible to help these children live a better life. The Charity's colours are Red and Black which usually connotes danger but also it can show love and how they want to help these children. The voice over helps anchor and help the viewer understand the text and show Kony in a even worse light as if the voice over was not there the viewer would not know half the thing he has done. The use of fast pace music shows that there will be fast change if you help the cause. The use of personal touch such as showing were your money will be spent in Uganda and the children you will be helping shows that the money is going to be used for a good cause and will help a child live a better life.

Representation:

In Kony 2012 the first main representation is of Kony, Kony is portrayed in a negative light and spoke of as a beast, It shows what he has done to children and how he makes there life a misery. Also in the video where Jacob is speaking of his brother and starts crying it shows how much of an impact this period of there life has made creating sympathy and making the viewer want to donate. Also as Kony is black it shows how evil and bad he is and how hes on the run which leads to the the theory of Prop were the ethnicitys are sterotyped and made to be seen in a good or bad light

Also after the recent years and events were the youths of our generation are shown to be rebels and not to care Kony 2012 shows how the youths can come together and fight for a good cause, they are made to come together on Facebook which is a big part in most youths lives.

Media Institution:

Kony is promoted is by having the support of celebrities such as Angelina jolie and Rihanna and they promote the stop Kony via twitter and hash tagging which also spreads the message fast and quicker than print like posters and it is also easier to share or comment on it and this is why the riots in London and Arab countries happened. Also the Logo of Kony is a Triangle upside down, which shows the maslows theory of the pyramid has been flipped and that everyone in the public no matter what race, age, socioeconmic group can join and help the cause.
Audience:

The audience that are being targeted in the video are the younger/teenager audience, This is as they are the ones with the online knowledge and the ones who can use facebook and twitter to get there views heard. Also with the use of Stickers and braclets it can make them think what 'Kony' is and make them want to join.

Guardian Advert Homework.

What techniques does the ad use to persuade the audience to consume the Guardian?

This ad uses may techniques to attract viewers. Firstly we see a variety of people in the advertisement, different genders, races, ages and classes. This leads to the viewer to think that the newspaper covers people like them and they cater for all types of people as The guardian is regarded as more of a up street newspaper unlike the red tops such as the sun and the daily star. This all leads to the consumer wanting to go out and buy the newspaper. Also it persuades young people as it shows the use of twitter and other social networking and peoples tweet. This makes the younger generation be seen in a better light other than the one create in the summer. But to the older generation, who are familiar to the established guardian this may create questions such as 'what are all there websites like twitter and what are these hashtags' thus gaining there attention this is the use of enigma codes, and the only way they can be answered is by visiting the online sector of the guardian and clicking on the #'s and using the internet.

Also it persuades the user to consume the guardian as as the advert goes on the story develops and develops into something which is something just not ordinary. this is done by adapting the story to the current climate and this being economic trouble. As the story develops it shows the three little piggies are the ones to blame as they framed the wolf for insurance scam as they couldn't pay the mortgage. These all being new methods and relating to the current climate making the consumer think and realise that the guardian is up-to date and its covers every inch. This also can create a bit of a morale panic as it shows the suburban household may be running out of money and the way to cover it is by fraud and scamming.

How is the news represented in the ad?

Firstly the news is represented as something which has moved with the times. They are constant uses of all 3 types of media thus being print, e-media and moving image. This shows that the news has moved co-injuction with the times and by doing this and catering for all the 3 medias it will lead to more consumers. We can show that the guardians optimises all 3 platforms at the end as there is a shot of a Tablet Pc, traditional newspaper, mobile phone and a laptop and all are shown to be with the target type of person as the newspaper is with the well dressed man and the laptop being portable is with a more student like person this backing up news is being reached by all types of people. Also with the integration of Facebook and guardian it reaches a more younger audience. Also within the advert it shows peoples views and tweets constantly this is backing up the point everything is getting more open and  everyones has a voice and voice which can be heard. This making the consumer feel more connected to the News company as before everything would be set and the newsreader would say what was need to be said. This being the use of the Hypodermic Needle.

However it may represent the news in a bad light as before the news was serious and was read out in a serious manner as this was the main source of information for thousands during the war era but now its being in a way made fun of and not being taken as seriously as they have integrated the baby story of the three little piggies. which has been known to be a humorous and funny story this making the news a lot less serious and as times have progressed people have moved on to E-media to gain their news and they public is a lot less serious and times have moved on from when the news was the number one way to gain information of the world.

What issues of new technology does this ad raise and what does it tell us about the values of The Guardian?

It shows how technology and good old news have combined and become something that can go and reach a bigger population. We see constant uses of all three platforms and we see at the end the shots of a newspaper, Tablet, phone and laptop highlighting that guardian is available on all 3 platforms and how they have combined and highlighting again that e media is the most dominant as it has the most power and can reach more people just as how it was used to rally up thousands for the London riots. Also when they are the shots of the tweets its shows many different languages showing how the world is becoming even more connected and every one has a say in the world. This all showing the core consumer of the guardian newspaper being the upper classes and older generation that time is moving on and in order to adapt you must follow the crowed and guardian have done this by offering Apps, Online Websites, Twitter account and the integration with Facebook. Also as the newspaper is dominantly capitalist its shows high end products and well of detached houses supporting the views of Borgeoisie and people who would like to be one step high in the socio economic group.

On the basis of this ad, who does the Guardian brand appeal to?

On the bases of this ad, the guardian is still appealing to its first target market this being the class A and B and the well of people who live in the suburbs of london and live in the detached houses as this is the type of house being raided and the type of area is certainly viewable. This all highlighting the capitalism views of the Guardian as having a view you must study and then work and have a good job to gain money. Also in the advert it shows the piggies to be in the working class and as the working class are more poorer they are the most likely to commit the crimes to pay there way as it was in the old days re igniting the old feuds and creating a morale panic. Also portray the working class a pigs also makes them looks worse.

But as times have passed the guardian is targeting a younger more teenage audience. It has done this by the use of the classic 3 little piggies as every teenager can relate to the story and as they expand on it it makes humour and shows that guardian is very detailed. Also it has done it by the use of social networking. The Guardian have recently integrated with Facebook making news viewable to the mass young audiences of Facebook and also it uses twitter which also has a very large presence of the younger audiences.

Also it appeals to both genders as both are mentioned. But i uses the views that both can get together and create a big protest when the government of a group of people are doing something wrong and in this case its done as the pigs are done injustice. Backing up the identification theory as working class can identify

Documentaries

Expository Documentaries use narrators to address the audience directly and to present an explanation interpreting what is being seen by viewers in the mis-en-scene.

This is done by the use of a narrator or commentator with a ‘Voice of Authority’. This is often used to anchor the meaning of the visual text for the viewer.

In order to make identification easier, film makers tend to use voices of male, white, middleclass narration which would represent the target audience.

Expository documentaries often engage the viewer by creating arguments and conflicting viewpoints. This type of documentary also attempts to persuade viewers.

The typical conventions of an expository documentary include a voiceover, analysis and exposition of a topic and images used alongside voiceovers.

Observational Documentaries

• Observational documentaries follow a person, or an event.
• This form of documentary tells a story of a journey as it unfolds.
• There are very rarely voiceovers and interviews used in this form.
• Takes are relatively long.
• The typical conventions of an observational documentary includes being filmed on-location, direct sound recording (very little use of non-diegetic sound), documentary maker is behind the camera, participant show no acknowledgement that they are being filmed. This is usually because they don’t know they are being filmed and represents a fly-on-the wall perspective of the text.

Reflecxive Documentaries

In a Reflective Documentaries Film maker acknowledges the presence of a film maker and they give a running narrative, Images – The images in the film seem to be subordinate to the voice-over narration. However, the scene with the goat is an example of how these images are subverted in the film. Buñuel uses documentary techniques to call into question the ethics of such forms of documentary filmmaking that we as spectators tend to accept. This is ultimately what reflexive documentaries ask of us. They ask us to see documentaries for what they really are; a construct or representation.

Technophobes

BBC Three is launching a new program called “Technophobes”, following the lives of five people who are afraid of technology.

Complete the following questions on your blog (and make sure you have definitely posted up your blog address here):

a. AUDIENCE: Who would this program appeal to? In your answer include gender, socio-economic status, psychographics and demographics.

I think that it will appeal to 15-25 year olds, as they are the generation who have been brought up during the time that technology was at its growth phase and are bound to be very fluent in the technology talk and all the new gadgets. The socioeconomic groups that are likey to watch this are A to C2 as they are the one who are likely to buy and afford the gadgets.
b. INSTITUTION: What assumptions can you make about this program just from knowing that it will be broadcast on BBC Three?

I think that as its on BBC3 it will not be very serious or formal. It contain a more informal tone, and as its on late it may contain swearing.

c. MEDIA FORMS: What kind of program are you expecting to see when it is broadcast? Include specific ideas about content, along with more broad knowledge of the codes and conventions of this genre.

I think that the overall show many be presented by one or two people. And the people will probably switch between pre recorded segments and the camera will following the person in the 'natural habitat' and will help them overcome phobias and will make fun of old people who may not no how to use the computers or new technology.

d. REPRESENTATION: What kind of position or opinion about these “technophobes” would you expect this documentary to project? Explain why.

I think the programme may be about old people or the 'Silver Surfers' and how they do not no how to use the technology that is around at this present time and how they need help adjust themselves to the technology. This also may project to the target audience to help the old people to use the computers.
